What is Caustic Soda and Caustic Soda Types

Caustic soda (also known as sodium hydroxide, lye or naoh) is a solid white, pearl product with the formula “NaOH”. It is a highly caustic base and alkali product, and if in contact with the skin can cause severe burns. It is a versatile product that can be found in a variety of processes.

Caustic Soda History

There is no exact time for the invention of caustic soda, but some historians believe that the first mention of this substance dates back to the late thirteenth century. On the other hand, one of the great figures of Yemen mentions the process of producing sodium hydroxide as one of the steps in making soap in the book Inventions of Various Industrial Arts. Caustic soda was mass-produced in 1791 by a French chemist, and now, in the twentieth century, one method of producing NaOH is to electrolyze NaCl, or NaCl.

Sodium Hydroxide Uses

Caustic Soda or Sodium Hydroxide has many different uses such as unblocking drains and making soap. Caustic soda main uses include being used as a drain pipe cleaner, unblocks drains, removes built up grease from ovens, used to make soap and detergents. It is a versatile product to have around the house as it has so many uses.

Sodium hydroxide and chlorine are manufactured together to produce chlorine bleach. The reason that drain cleaners contain sodium hydroxide is that it converts gats and grease that clog pipes into soap, which then dissolves in water. Making it a very effective drain cleaner.

Caustic Soda in the soap manufacturing industry is commonly used to make solid soaps. Many individuals now make their own soaps using caustic soda.

Sodium Hydroxide Hazards

Caustic Soda needs to be handle with extreme care. The product is corrosive to the skin, and can cause damage over time. Always be careful when using caustic soda.

Caustic Soda Types

After knowing what caustic soda is, we should review all types of it. Sodium hydroxide is produced in various forms such as flakes, granules, powder and liquid and as a result can be used in various industries.
